The Lockheed Vega is a five to seven-seat high-wing monoplane airliner built by the Lockheed Corporation. Production began in 1927 and the aircraft became famous for its use by a number of record-breaking pilots who were attracted to its high speed and long range.
The Vega 5B is the seven-seat passenger transport version, built for higher gross weight operations with commercial operators.
Arthur Cornelius Goebel, Jr., known as Art Goebel (October 19, 1895 – December 3, 1973) was an American aviation pioneer, aerobatic pilot, and film actor born and raised in Belen, New Mexico.
After his success in the 1927 Dole Air Race, Goebel continued to participate in flying competitions across the country. From August 19 to 20, 1928, Goebel flying the Lockheed Vega 5B, NX4769, called the “Yankee Doodle”, broke the transcontinental speed record flying coast-to-coast from Los Angeles, California, to Garden City, New York, in 18 hours and 58 minutes, in what was also the first nonstop flight from west to east.
The Yankee Doodle had stopped in Albuquerque in 1928.
The first air field in Belen, New Mexico was named Art Goebel Field.
