Additional Information:
The de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver is a single-engine high-wing propeller-driven short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft developed and manufactured by de Havilland Canada. It has been primarily operated in a wide variety of utility roles, such as cargo and passenger hauling, aerial application, and civil aviation services.
The de Havilland L-20A Beaver is a variant of the DHC-2. It was developed as a short take-off and landing (STOL) utility transport aircraft for the U.S. Army, There were 968 L-20A’s built.
The Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) used a L-20A Beaver aircraft, 0-16539, to drop test devices to determine the depth of ice packs. The bomb shaped probes would impact the ice and send radio signals back to scientists so they can determine the depth. The experimental drops were made on the Moriarty Bombing Range in January of 1975.
