Additional Information:
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is an American four-seat, single-engine, high fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company. First flown in 1955, more 172s have been built than any other aircraft. The Skyhawk name was originally used for a trim package, but was later applied to all standard-production 172 aircraft.
On January 16, 1973, the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) began using a Cessna 172 Skyhawk aircraft for aerial surveillance and pursuit work. Nicknamed the “Sky Sentinel”, this especially equipped conventional fixed-wing aircraft also featured short takeoff and landing (STOL) requirements which allowed for slower cruising speeds and better maneuverability during pursuit calls.
The Cessna 172 used by APD was number N101PD. The New Mexico State Police also used a similar Cessna 172 aircraft (pictured) for statewide police work.
