The Beechcraft Model 55 Baron is a light twin-engine piston aircraft designed and produced by Beechcraft and introduced in 1961. Developed from the Travel Air as a low-wing monoplane, the Model 55 Barons were produced from 1961 to 1983, with 3,651 manufactured. Variants of the Model 55 remain in production today.
This Model 55 Baron was operated by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and had modified tail with an extended boom that housed magnetic airborne detection equipment which was used for geological surveys. This aircraft operated in and around Albuquerque New Mexico for approximately three weeks beginning on March 29, 1974. Aircraft number N-3800 had been specifically used for geological mapping in the Albuquerque area. The aircraft was home based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
