Surplus US Air Force T-34A basic training planes were given to the New Mexico Civil Air Patrol and the Kirtland AFB Flying Club. They were used from 1961. One T-34A, aircraft number N-421-NM, crashed into the Rio Grande during a search for a drowning victim. The plane was repaired and used until it crashed again in northern New Mexico in March of 1980.
