The Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King was an American twin-engine helicopter designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft. With its landmark design, the Sea King was one of the first rotorcraft to use turboshaft engines. The Sea King was initially designated the HSS-2.
Several Sea Kings were operated by the United States Marine Corps’s HMX-1 unit and were used as the official helicopters of the President of the United States. In this capacity, the call sign ‘Marine One’ was used by the helicopter when occupied by the President.
President John F. Kennedy used this helicopter during his tour of Los Alamos, New Mexico then and Sandia Labs located at Kirtland AFB on December 8, 1962. The presidential aircraft, Air Force One, first delivered the president to Santa Fe New Mexico and then picked him up at Albuquerque later that day.
